Surface Treatment of Elastomer Components

Surface Treatment of Elastomer Components by RFS Treatment – Perfect Sliding Properties by Möllering Gummi- und Kunststofftechnik GmbH in Norderstedt

Möllering Gummi- und Kunststofftechnik GmbH in Norderstedt is your competent partner when it comes to the precise manufacturing and refinement of elastomer components.

A proven method of surface treatment is the so-called RFS process – a technique we use to specifically improve the functionality, appearance, and service life of elastomer products.

What is RFS Treatment?

This refers to a special surface treatment for elastomer components such as seals, O-rings, or technical molded parts.

The treatment – often in the form of a thin sliding or separating layer – is permanently bonded to the component and specifically alters its friction and wear properties.

This process is particularly advantageous for silicone components. Due to their surface properties, many silicone parts tend to be sticky and attract dust.

This disadvantage greatly restricts their use and application. The sticky, dust-attracting surfaces of the parts should therefore become smoother and cleaner, with reduced friction!

The surface treatment achieves a reduction in sliding friction. This tribological effect is the result of a targeted modification of the elastomer surface.

At the same time, the material properties (mechanical and physical) remain completely unaffected. The surface modification largely remains intact throughout the product’s service life.

Advantages of Surface Treatment with RFS

Improved assembly properties:
Elastomer parts are easier to assemble because friction is reduced, and sliding properties are significantly improved. Dust adhesion, especially in silicone parts, is drastically reduced by the smooth surface.

Protection against wear and aging:
The coating acts as a protective layer against abrasion, chemicals, and environmental influences. This increases the service life of the components – even under high mechanical stress.

The haptics are permanently improved. Result: no more “stick-slip effect.” Unwanted dirt particles can no longer adhere or remain stuck.

Reduced noise generation:
The smooth surface leads to fewer friction noises – a major advantage especially in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries.

Unchanged suitability for food applications:
Silicone components in particular are often used in applications where they may come into contact with food. For this, they must pass tests in accordance with FDA regulations (21CFR§177.2600), EC 1935/2004, BfR Recommendation XV, as well as §31 of the German LFGB. This also applies to parts with RFS treatment.

In an external examination by TÜV Süd, tests were carried out on a silicone rubber test specimen with RFS treatment in accordance with the above-mentioned regulations. In particular, migrating or volatile substances, specific ingredients such as PAHs, and other interactions were determined.

The test requirements according to the specified regulations were fulfilled by the silicone rubber with RFS treatment.

Consistent quality:
With state-of-the-art facilities and precise process control, Möllering guarantees consistently high coating quality – from prototype to mass production.
