elastomers

Elastomers are widely used due to their cheap production, robustness and wide range of uses.

Many tasks and requirements in the technical field can often be solved simply by selecting the right material. Therefore, we offer materials and material combinations in the most diverse specifications for our customers. Our production program includes elastomers, thermoplastics and foams, adhesives and special polymers.

You can find more information about elastomers here: Our list of elastomers and our list of elastomer characteristics.

elastomers

WE OFFER YOU AN EXCELLENT VARIETY OF DIFFERENT QUALITIES THAT YOU CAN SELECT ACCORDING TO APPLICATION AND REQUIREMENTS.

Elastomers are cross-linked polymer materials whose macromolecules are three-dimensionally cross-linked with a wide mesh. They are given an irreversible shape and cannot be hot-formed or welded. The base material of elastomers is caoutchouc.

By adding further additives, an elastomer mixture is created, which changes to its typical, rubber-elastic state through vulcanization (crosslinking of the macromolecules). The terms vulcanizate or rubber are also used synonymously for the elastomer.

FROM RUBBER TO ELASTOMER

The terms “rubber” and “elastomer” are often used incorrectly. A basic distinction is made between the two types of material.

Rubber is an uncrosslinked but vulcanizable polymer. At higher temperatures and under the influence of deforming forces, rubbers show viscous flow, which can be further processed in a shaping process. Rubbers are therefore the non-crosslinked starting product of elastomers.

Elastomers are cross-linked polymer materials up to the decomposition temperature. Elastomers are rubber-elastic and cannot be hot-formed and cannot be welded.

AREAS OF APPLICATION FOR ELASTOMERS

The most important property of elastomers is their highly elastic behavior after compression or tensile deformation, even at higher temperatures.

In addition, elastomers are characterized by high toughness under static and dynamic stresses, have high abrasion resistance, are impermeable to air and water and, in some cases, have high swelling resistance to solvents, as well as chemical resistance.

Elastomers on a synthetic or natural basis are used accordingly in numerous areas of everyday life as well as in industry and production, e.g.:

  • Medical technology
  • Food industry
  • Printing and packaging industry
  • Vehicle construction
  • Household appliances
